Franz West, who lived his whole life in Vienna, was one of the leading figures in late 20th-early 21st century sculpture. West received attention and acclaim for his resolutely eccentric, even impudent sculptural objects, doing things sculpture isn't supposed to do. His attitude was anti-purist; he would invariably opt for the silly over the stern. West was in fact relying on his own sense of balance and presence, as in this strange street corner presence that could be an animal or something meteorological. Whatever it is, this charismatic worm is at once imposing and reassuring like a "good" monster in a B Grade horror movie --- and offers passersby three places to sit.
