Hymn of Life: Tulips
Hymn of Life: Tulips, 2007
Yayoi Kusama (1929- )
Fiberglass, Ceramic Tile, Steel
10' x 20'
City of Beverly Hills
In Hymn of Life: Tulips the world-renowned Japanese artist builds three gargantuan tulips and covers them with the dotting patterns that so endear her to her vast audience. The patterns evince Kusama's intense obsessiveness, but the flowers themselves and the colors they sport reflect the childlike wonder and delight in the world that the artist has retained all these years. Hymn of Life: Tulips is Kusama's first public-art commission in the United States, and the Beverly Hills Fine Arts (now Arts and Culture) Commission's first commissioned artwork.
