Jack Zajac was born in Ohio but moved with his family to Southern California, where he received his artistic instruction. He has been associated with California art ever since - he now lives in Santa Cruz - but he has spent extensive time in Italy, which he first visited as a recent graduate on an American Academy Rome Prize. His work is essentially abstract with representational references, from the animal figures of his breakout years to the Falling Water series exemplified here and other forms suggestive of natural phenomena. The erect, graceful forms of the Falling Water series come in single columns, as here, and in multiple groupings, as at 9336 Civic Center Drive. One of Zajac's stone swans can be seen at 433 N.
