Training Coach Program

The Training Coach program is the utilization of a selected few current City employees in the facilitation of trainings offered to all City Employees. The City began its Training Coach program when the Supervisor’s Academy was created and implemented as a mandatory training program for all first line supervisors. The idea was that Training Coaches would observe our consultant, Richard Hughes, and conduct make-up sessions in the years to follow for new supervisors or for those who needed to make up any of the original 6 modules. Since that time Richard Hughes has added 5 more modules as well as 4 new ones for the Management and Leadership Academies. Our Training Coaches have facilitated these classes to our staff and have received great evaluations for their facilitation by the attendees. The Training Coaches have also created and facilitated their own curriculum of soft skilled courses. Recently, the City has recruited more in-house employees who have been trained to become excellent facilitators. UCLA instructors have certified our Training Coaches through an extensive eight week program. All participants have learned to master at least one area of a soft skill and then facilitate learning processes for this skill in the Supervisor’s Academy, or the new Leadership and Management Academy or in other learning events and processes.

Our objective is to train, educate, prepare, and equip the current and future participants of the Training Coach program with the knowledge of new and innovative methods of the training industry, so that they may become credible, professional trainers in the eyes of their audience who are their fellow colleagues. Eventually our Training Coaches will conduct as much in-house training as possible, which will save the City thousands of dollars while continuing training programs for all staff development.
