As Chief Strategy + Equity Officer, Nomsa Khalfani provides strategic leadership, management, and guidance to develop and implement strategic programs and initiatives. Nomsa drives efforts to ensure that the organization’s programmatic and administrative activities and policies advance and reflect a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and advance health equity for all. Before joining Essential Access, Nomsa held several leadership roles at St. John's Well Child and Family Center (SJWCFC), a network of federally qualified health centers.

Nomsa is a graduate of the Southern California Coro Women in Leadership Program, the Blue Shield of California Foundation Clinic Leadership Institute Emerging Leaders Program, and the California Women’s Foundation Women’s Policy Institute. She currently serves as a member of the Los Angeles (LA) City Health Commission, LA County Community Prevention and Population Health Taskforce, and the African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Steering Committee. In 2020, Nomsa was recognized as one of Southern CA’s Top 50 Diverse Leaders.

Nomsa holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Masters of Arts from Phillips Graduate Institute, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Capella University, School of Public Service Leadership.

Journalist, Editorial Columnist for the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles

Tabby Refael is a weekly editorial columnist for The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, as well as a contributor to Newsweek, Los Angeles Magazine, the Los Angeles Review of Books and other publications. Tabby served as co-founder and former executive director of 30 Years After, a non-partisan, non-profit that promotes the participation and leadership of Iranian-American Jews in American civic, political, and Jewish life. Named "a prominent chronicler of Persian L.A." by the Los Angeles Times, Tabby was born in post-revolutionary Iran and came to the U.S. as a refugee and child survivor of the Iran-Iraq War in the late 1980s. She holds a Master’s in Public Diplomacy from the University of Southern California (USC) and a Bachelor’s in Communication from UC San Diego.

As a founding member of Black Women for Wellness, Janette holds the Executive Director position. My work in the health field began as an advocate during my pregnancy, seeking a holistic practitioner to work with my concept of a gentle birth. Today, I am part of the Reproductive Justice Coalition of Los Angeles, California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, and National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda. Over the course of the years, my journey has included The Birthing Project USA/Los Angeles, Great Beginnings for Black Babies, National Health Foundation, March of Dimes, California Primary Care Association, Inglewood Healthy Mothers & Babies, South Los Angeles Health Project and Women Infant & Children (South Los Angeles advisory board) Programs. An alumnus of the University of Southern California, I am currently seeking a doctorate in community organizational development.

Magic through radio is yet another love, having produced day-long specials celebrating the lives of African American leaders, weekly programs highlighting women’ voices with Talking Book, African World News, Family Tree, Some of Us Are Brave and Liberated Sisters radio programs. Great food, a good story (either book or movie), spoken word, live music, salsa dancing, and a scenic walk make my day in Los Angeles. A victory that encourages health for women and girls grounds me through the challenges, traffic, and the struggle for freedom.

Director of Communications and Research - Hispanas Organized for Political Equity (HOPE) - www.latinas.org/

Mayahuel “Maya” Gomez-O’Cadiz is the Director of Communications and Research for Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) where she manages HOPE’s research and communications efforts with the goal of advancing the economic and political status of Latinas. In this position she leads all aspects of HOPE’s media communications and online presence, coordinates original research including public opinion polling, survey design, and data analysis, and produces evaluations which inform HOPE’s educational programming and outreach. Most recently, she was a contributor to HOPE’s 2020 Economic Status of Latinas Report, as wells as Too Big to Fail: Latina Microbusiness Owners, and editor to HOPE’s 2017 Economic Status of Latinas Report.

Previously, Maya was project manager at Camino Public Relations, a New York-based strategic communications firm representing non-profit organizations. She has a background in international affairs and social research and has worked abroad as a teacher and community organizer in Spain and Colombia. Maya received her Master’s degree in International Affairs from New School University in New York City, with a concentration in media and culture. She completed her undergraduate studies in Communications and Political Science at Saint Louis University Madrid Campus.
