City Council to Hear Holiday Moratorium Exemption Request for Sunday, April 25

Metro has requested City Council consideration to permit work on Sunday, April 25, 2021 (Academy Awards), to minimize project schedule impacts and maximize construction productivity to prepare for the arrival of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Staff will present this item at the City Council meeting on April 20, 2021. Metro proposes to implement traffic control along Wilshire to access deck panels for material deliveries between midnight and 10:45 am, and to complete station construction support work within the Reeves Yard and S. Reeves Dr. closure between 1 am and 4 pm.  No surface work activities would be allowed on Wilshire between 4 pm and midnight.

The above hours are compliant with the Metro MOA and the Settlement Agreement executed in December 2020.

Weekly Update 4/16/21

Wilshire/Rodeo Station

Station excavation in progress beneath Wilshire.

The contractor continues excavating the future Rodeo Station from the Reeves Yard on Wilshire from 7 am to 4 pm. This work is expected to last through April 2021. Excavation from deck openings and hauling material from the job site may occur from 1 am to 10:45 am daily, with traffic control setup beginning at midnight. Excavation may occur underground 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

South Reeves remains closed at Wilshire.

Over the last few years, the contractor has relocated utilities, installed dewatering wells, installed piles and steel beams, and replaced the street surface on Wilshire between Crescent and El Camino with concrete deck panels. Excavation, grading, preparation for the station invert slab, and placement of concrete will continue below ground over the next few months. The street will remain closed at Wilshire, though access will be provided to the parking garage at 9420 Wilshire. Work hours within the Reeves staging yard are from 8 am to 8 pm daily.

Delivery of material and station construction to begin.

The contractor is getting ready for the next phase of work, material delivery and concrete placement. This work will be performed through the deck panels and will occur mostly at night. Work hours are from 12 am to 10:45 am, when Wilshire can be reduced to one lane in each direction, and from 10:45 am to 4 pm when Wilshire can be reduced to two lanes in each direction.

Geotechnical instrumentation being installed in Beverly Hills.

Installation of geotechnical instruments within the station box and along the tunnel alignment to monitor ground movement, settlement, and other geological conditions has been completed. Maintenance of these instruments and equipment will be ongoing throughout construction. This work will include intermittent closures of traffic lanes, sidewalks, crosswalks, and parking meters. Work hours will be weekdays from 7 am to 4 pm on Wilshire and 8 am to 4 pm on residential streets off Wilshire.

Installation of instruments on 10-foot poles will take place over the next two weeks along the tunnel alignment on Spalding, S. Lasky, and Charleville. Short term closures will be implemented for this work. Work hours on these streets will be weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm.

ADA ramps and alley improvements underway on Clifton Way.

A City contractor has made improvements to the alley, sidewalks, and curb ramps near the Clifton and Crescent intersection. The completed work included removing and replacing concrete, reconstructing the ADA curb ramps at each corner of the intersection, and replacing the alley approaches on Clifton between Crescent and N Canon. Some work like crosswalk striping will be completed over the next couple of weeks. Work hours will be from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays. Traffic flow will be impacted and delays will occur. Pedestrian detours will also be in place during this work.

Wilshire/La Cienega Station

Construction of appendage structures underway.

Construction of the future Wilshire/La Cienega Station has transitioned to appendage structures, which include vital systems such as emergency exits, ventilation rooms, and utility rooms. This work will require closures of traffic lanes, as well as temporary full closures of some streets. This work will be implemented in phases through the second quarter of 2023.

The initial phase of this work is expected to last for approximately 20 months. During this phase, Wilshire will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between San Vicente and La Cienega. Left turns will be restricted from Wilshire onto Gale, as well as from Tower onto Wilshire. Additionally, North Gale will be closed at Wilshire from 9 pm Fridays through 6 am Mondays.

Additional information can be found in Metro's latest construction notice for the appendage work.

Additional closures anticipated near Wilshire.

The following closures* are scheduled to take place during the upcoming week:

  • North Gale will be closed from 3 am to 6 pm on weekdays and Saturday.
  • The sidewalk on the western side of North Gale will be closed from 6 am to 5 pm on weekdays.
  • The sidewalk on the northern side of Wilshire will be closed between Hamilton and Gale from 6 am to 5 pm on weekdays.
  • Westbound Wilshire will be intermittently reduced to one lane between La Cienega and San Vicente from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays and 7 am to 6 pm on Saturday.
  • Parking will be restricted on Wilshire between La Cienega and San Vicente from 7 am to 4 pm on weekdays and weekends.

Please use alternative routes and continue to respect construction barriers and detours for your safety.

Metro 20 and 720 bus stop relocated for 18 months on Wilshire.

As of November 1, Metro has temporarily relocated the eastbound 20 and 720 bus stop in front of 8484 Wilshire Blvd. to Wilshire and Willaman and has added a westbound 720 stop at Wilshire and Willaman. This relocation is expected to last for 18 months.
