Food Waste Reduction (2/12/20)

Wasted food is a growing problem in our modern society. In 2015, more than 39 million tons of food waste was generated, and only 5.3 percent was diverted from landfills. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that more food reaches landfills and incinerators than any other single material in our everyday trash. Bernadet Silva-Garcia will cover possible food waste reduction options that can help with this growing problem.

Bernadet Silva

Project Manager for the Los Angeles County Food Redistribution Initiative (LACFRI), which is housed within the LA County Department of Public Health. Bernadet holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Policy and a master’s degree in Public Health from UC Irvine. She has experience working for other health departments in Orange County and the Tohono O’Odham Nation in Arizona. Bernadet has trained County health inspectors, school food service directors, recycling coordinators, nonprofits, businesses, and others on food waste, source reduction, and best practices for food donation since 2016.
