ANNOUNCEMENTS

• On June 21, 2022, City Council unanimously approved installing bike lanes on Doheny Drive between Burton Way and Whitworth Drive. The bike lanes were installed in July 2023 as part of the annual pavement marking project. CLICK HERE for more information. 

• The Public Works Department launched its 2023 Transportation Safety Campaign. Each month in 2023 will focus on a different transportation safety theme, from driving the speed limit and obeying stop signs to safe school drop-off and respecting cyclists. CLICK HERE for more information. 

• In December 2022, the League of American Bicyclists honored 32 cities and towns with a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award, with an additional seven places earning an Honorable Mention, including the City of Beverly Hills. The full list of award recipients can be viewed HERE. Beverly Hills received the Honorable Mention award for starting efforts to address the need of bicyclists in the community. The League of American Bicyclists recognized that the City has made considerable accomplishments since the recent adoption of the Complete Streets Plan in 2021 and has a strong potential for an upgraded award level once more improvements from the plan have been made. Over 100 communities that originally earned an Honorable Mention have gone on to be awarded a Bronze designation or higher. For more information about the BFC program, visit bikeleague.org/community.
   

BIKEWAY TYPES

Providing a mix of bikeway types helps to accommodate the needs of cyclists of all ages and levels of comfort in the street. The City currently has Class II, III and IV bikeways.

CITY BIKE PROGRAMS

Minimum Grid Bicycle Markings

On January 4, 2022, the City Council approved installation of a Minimum Grid Bikeway Network. The term "minimum grid" refers to the concept of quickly implementing a basic bikeway network, while also continuing to pursue longer-range efforts to expand and upgrade cycling infrastructure. View the January 4, 2022 staff report and visit the Minimum Grid webpage for more details. Staff anticipates installation of the Minimum Grid Network will be completed by April 2022.

Bike Counter

On January 13, 2022, the City installed a real time bike counts display on North Santa Monica Boulevard. This display shows in real time how many bicyclists have passed by the sign per day and total bicyclists per year, which will help staff better understand existing bicycling conditions, such as how many bicyclists ride during adjacent special events, during certain weather conditions, and at certain times of day. This data will provide a holistic picture of how bicyclists are currently using the street, which in turn will help the City conduct informed, data-driven transportation planning. Bike Rack-on-Request Program

The Beverly Hills Bike Rack-On-Request Program provides residents and business owners in the City of Beverly Hills the opportunity to request a bike rack location for installation in the public right-of-way in commercial areas (if feasible). The bike racks are available free of charge. Click here for more information.

Beverly Hills Bike Share

In 2015, the City of Beverly Hills was the second city in Los Angeles County to implement a bike share system with a fleet of 50 smart bicycles distributed among 10 bike share stations. Beverly Hills Bike Share was a valued feature of Beverly Hill's mobility system for approximately 5 years.

On July 31, 2021, the City suspended the Beverly Hills Bike Share system due to the bike share equipment approaching the end of its useful life and a high subsidy per ride. The City is exploring new opportunities to provide shared mobility in Beverly Hills.

The City appreciates the collective community effort it took to launch the system and wants to thank the Beverly Hills Bike Share members that have supported the system over the years.

Free Bike Safety Booklets

The City has a limited number of copies of the California Bicycling Street Smarts: Riding Confidently, Legally, and Safely booklet, which includes safe bicycling techniques on public roads and streets. This booklet incorporates with permission  Bicycling Street Smarts: Riding Confidently, Legally, and Safely by John S. Allen, and was produced by the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and California Association of Bicycling Organizations.
