Applying for a Library Card

Library cards are free to the residents of the City of Beverly Hills.  Residents of Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties may also receive a free library card. You will need to provide both photo identification and a proof of current address.

1. Photo Identification: We will accept any one of the following as photo identification: a valid driver's license, a valid California ID, a Passport, a government issued photo ID as photo identification. In addition you need to provide a proof of address.

2. Current Address: We will accept any one of the following as proof of current address: a current utility bill, a credit card statement, a rental or property tax receipt, current school documents that show your home address, a car registration.

To receive a Library Card, fill out an application (Mac users: use Adobe Reader to view) and present the application with identification in person at the Beverly Hills Public Library.

All library cards will need to be renewed on the date of your birthday.  Please be prepared to provide photo identification at the time of renewal.

Computer-Use-Only Cards

Computer-use-only cards are issued as a courtesy to those who do not want full library privileges.  Computer-use-only cards are not eligible for borrowing library materials.

Computer–use-only cards are issued to adults and minors in grade 6 and up.  Cards are issued according to the library’s registration requirements and are valid for six months from the date of issue.

Library borrowers are allowed only one valid card per borrower.

Verification of identity is required to receive a computer-use-only card.

Verification of identity may be provided by a document such as a driver’s license; state ID card; school or university ID card; voter’s registration card; Medicare, Medicaid, or clinic eligibility card; employer’s ID card; consulate card; major credit card; or other officially issued printed ID card.

Loan Periods / Limits / Fines and Fees

A patron may have a total of 64 items checked out on their patron record at one time. Fines are charged only if materials are returned late. Fines for overdue materials are charged 7 days a week.  Failure to pay accrued fines may result in the borrower's account being turned over to our collection agency Fidelity Creditor Services.  The patron is charged the cost of turning over the account to Fidelity.  Patrons who have been sent to the Collection Agency may not check out materials until the balance is paid in full.

Collecting Fees and Fines

Returning Library Materials

Items checked out from the Beverly Hills Public Library must be returned to the Beverly Hills Public Library. Materials may be returned to the book slot located in the self check island or to the Customer Service Desk. An outside Book Drop is located in the handicapped parking area in the lot off Rexford Drive.  An automated return is also available in the north wall of the building adjacent to the handicap parking area.

Renewing Library Materials

Books and audio books may be renewed for 14 days, a maximum of two times. DVDs, BluRays, Music CDs, and interlibrary loan materials may not be renewed. Items for which there are pending holds/reservations may not be renewed. Items are not eligible for renewal until 7 days before their due date.

You may renew items 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via the Web by accessing Your Library Record. Click here for instructions on how to renew items online.
Renewals may also be done in person at the Circulation Desk.

The Library also offers Telephone Circulation Service. If you have a touch tone phone, you can renew your items by telephone 24 hours a day, by calling (310) 288-2223.

Borrowing and returning items has never been easier!

We are excited to introduce cloudLibrary - the new feature-packed app that makes it easier than ever to borrow, organize, and return your library items. cloudLibrary is available as a free download on a variety of platforms.

The library offers email overdue and reminder notices as a courtesy to library patrons.  We cannot guarantee that patrons will receive these email messages.  Interruptions in service for technical reasons, spam filters at the Internet Service Provider, filled mailboxes, and the frequency that patrons check their email all contribute to missed messages.  While the Library endeavors to notify cardholders of all overdue items, the library holds patrons responsible for tracking the due date on checked-out materials and for paying fines if the material is not returned or renewed on time, whether or not an email reminder or overdue notice was sent or received.

Patron Responsibility

Patrons are responsible for notifying the library about changes to their address, phone number, or email address.

Library Materials Theft while checked out

Upon notification that a patron's borrowed library materials have been stolen, the circulation supervisor will request a copy of the police report.  Once a copy has been received the circulation supervisor will waive the fines/fees and replacement costs.

Holds / Reserves

You can place a HOLD on any item that is currently checked out or on order for 75¢.  Items listed as available are not eligible for a HOLD.  Holds can be placed from any Library computer, or over the Web by clicking on Search the Catalog on the Library's Web Page. After searching for the title you wish to reserve, select the request button at the top of the screen. Click here for further instructions on how to place a reserve online. Holds/reserve may also be placed at the Circulation Desk. Fees are non-refundable. You will receive an automated telephone notification or email when your items are available.

Interlibrary Loan Service

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) offers our patrons the opportunity to request and receive items that are not owned by Beverly Hills Public Library.  Through ILL, you have access to the circulating book collections of all the libraries in the Southern California Library Cooperative, as well as universities and public library systems throughout the United States.  You must have a valid Beverly Hills Public Library card to use this service.  There are no fees for materials found in libraries who are members of the Southern California Library Cooperative.  For materials outside of the cooperative, there is a $5.00 service charge to cover the cost of shipping.  If the lending library charges a fee you will be contacted to find out if you are willing to pay the charges.

California’s Library Service for People with Print Disabilities

California’s Library Service for People with Print Disabilities, in association with the Library of Congress, provides free Braille and audio books, magazines and playback equipment to all eligible Californians unable to read standard print.  Follow the link to find your local braille and talking book library and sign up for free services.
