Paul-Alain Sevilla (1943-1994)
Oil, Canvas
Fine Art Ordinance Obligation of 9430 West Olympic Boulevard
Algerian-born French citizen Sevilla attended Ecole des Beaux Arts in Nice before emigrating to the United States, moving to Los Angeles in 1976. He was fascinated by surfaces and his works show many layers of paint laid on and scraped off, creating a rough textural finish.
Fun Fact: One of the founders of MOCA uncharacteristically agreed to visit Sevilla's small studio to see his work, was won over, and encouraged him to enter his work in the prestigious Beverly Hills Affaire in the Gardens Art Show in May 1989, where he ended up winning the Art League Purchase Award.
