Mystery in the Park
Mystery in the Park, 1972
Carlos Almaraz (1941-1989)
Acrylic Diptych on Board
Fine Art Ordinance Obligation of 9430 West Olympic Boulevard
Like Monet and his haystacks, Almaraz captured, from his apartment window, Echo Park in all its various incarnations: from serenely bucolic to hot, feverish, and dangerous. Bathed in deep violets, hot pinks and bloodlike reds, this Echo Park was a place of beauty and mystery. His "Echo Park" series of paintings, named after the Los Angeles park of the same name, became known worldwide and has been displayed in many museums internationally.
Fun Fact: Almaraz has been credited with bringing Chicano (Mexican-American) art to the attention of mainstream American art institutions.
