First Experience embodies a spirit of exploration and discovery on the part of two beings working both in concert and upon one another. The work is consistent with Binder's interest in broad humanistic themes expressed in a semi-abstract manner, notably as in the work of Mexican artists of the postwar era. Here, however, Binder has deliberately obscured the identities of the couple, who could be lovers, antagonists, parent and child, or any other combination. It is the energy of their human interaction rather than the exact nature of that interaction that motivates the artist.
