Indeterminate Line, 1987
Bernar Venet (1941- )
Fine Art Ordinance Obligation of 122 South Beverly Drive
Bernar Venet distilled the notion that randomness is mathematical and "doodled" them into a series of Indeterminate Line sculptures with no particular aesthetic agenda or predefined pattern. He then moved on to sculptures comprised of segments of circles and arcs of varying lengths. The line in all its variants - arcs, leaning arcs, vertical arcs, collapsed arcs and so on - compose Venet's vocabulary.
Fun Fact: Venet was born in France and as a boy struggled with asthma and academic subjects at school. Despite his early struggles, in 2005, Venet received the title of Chevalier de La Legion d'Honneur, France's highest honor.
