French artist Bernar Venet began his career in New York, where he arranged "performances" of experts in different fields lecturing simultaneously on their subjects. This seemingly provocative conceptual gesture actually embodied Venet's deep love and respect for science and knowledge, which has inspired the paintings and sculptures he has made since those days. This Indeterminate Line reflects his regard for randomness as a mathematical condition: what began as a quick doodle became a monumental chunk of steel, wound up like a huge coil.
