One of Poland's leading postwar artists, Abakanowicz became known for figures like this one that describe the human figure more or less in the negative - hollowed out, starting to collapse in on itself, and fabricated from materials that seem as much viscera as skin. Or perhaps they have been molded from the earth itself, and their bowed posture bespeaks the literal as well as physical weight of the world.
