Tony Smith was one of the leading lights of Minimal Art in New York in the 1960s, although he had developed his own stripped-down geometric style at least a decade earlier. He is best known for very large, almost architectural works, but smaller pieces like this rhombohedron (a three-dimensional form whose faces are rhomboid) allow viewers to study Smith's subtle manipulation of geometric forms - and realize how such shapes can change depending on the viewing angle.
