Basket Dancer

Basket Dancer, 1987

Glenna Goodacre (1939- )

Bronze, Green Patina, Marble

Fine Art Ordinance Obligation

One of America's leading sculptors of official monuments and portraits, Glenna Goodacre was born in Lubbock, Texas and has spent most of her professional career in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Western themes and the role of women in American history are among Goodacre's favored subjects; she is best known for the portrait of Sacagawea, the Native American (Lemhi Shoshone) who served as guide to the Lewis & Clark expedition, that appears on the currently minted American dollar coin. Basket Dancer similarly depicts an Indian female figure, here performing a ritual dance particular to Pueblo women. Goodacre has made sure to fashion her bronze personage with historic and cultural accuracy, as well as with the classical values of traditional figure modeling.
