Celluloid
Celluloid, 1959
(Robert) Merrell Gage (1892-1981)
Bronze, Granite
City of Beverly Hills with a donation by Corinne Griffith
The Celluloid monument was created to commemorate the official establishment of the City of Beverly Hills, some 45 years after the fact. Inscribed on the south side of the monument's square marble base, a statement reads, "In tribute to those celebrities of the motion picture industry who worked so valiantly for the preservation of Beverly Hills as a separate municipality - erected 1959." Kansas-born Southern Californian Merrell Gage was responsible for many of the public sculptures erected in the Los Angeles area (notably including the façade of the Los Angeles Times building downtown).
