The Purple Line Extension will extend the existing subway westward from its current terminus at Wilshire/Western, for about nine miles including seven new stations.  It will provide a high-capacity, high-speed, dependable travel alternate to and from LA's "second downtown," including destinations such as Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood.  

The project is scheduled to be built in three phases.  The first section of the Purple Line Extension will extend the subway from the Wilshire/ Western station in Los Angeles to a new station at Wilshire/La Cienega in Beverly Hills.  Work is currently underway along and adjacent to Wilshire Boulevard to relocate utilities (Advanced Utility Relocation) that would otherwise be impacted by subway construction, in preparation for the start of Section 1 construction in early 2017.  Section 1 is funded by local Measure R funds, with federal "New Starts" matching funds and a low-interest loan from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA) program.  

Metro is already working with the federal government to obtain matching funds for the Section 2 from La Cienega Boulevard in Beverly Hills to Century City.  The are also pursuing opportunities to accelerate funding through the America Fast Forward Initiative that could allow Section 3 to proceed and the entire project to be completed sooner.
