Beverly Hills City Council Unanimously Approves Resolution to Support a Woman’s Right to Choose

Beverly Hills, CA – In a 5-0 vote on Tuesday evening, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously adopted a resolution in support of a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion or not.  Councilmember John Mirisch requested that the item be brought forward for consideration.

The Council’s action comes after a draft opinion of the US Supreme Court was leaked and indicated the Court may overturn the 1973 decision of Roe v. Wade thereby ending the constitutional right to an abortion.

“As a woman, this is something emotionally charged for me,” said Mayor Lili Bosse.  “I feel very strongly that we have stood up and spoken out when we’ve seen human rights taken away.  This is a moment in time when we are standing on the shoulders of women who came before us and who come after us.  This is something I wholeheartedly support with all my soul.”

As part of the resolution, the Council urged the Supreme Court to reconsider this potential decision and not overturn Roe v. Wade.

California is already home to the Reproductive Privacy Act, which provides that every individual possesses a fundamental right to privacy with respect to reproductive decisions.  Last week, Governor Newsom and top state legislative leaders announced plans to add abortion protections to the state’s constitution.

The City of Beverly Hills has a long history of supporting everyone’s right to equality and freedom of choice.
