COVID-19 SAFETY FOR CONSTRUCTION SITE GUIDELINES
Construction site safety requirements and guidelines are developed and administered by CalOSHA. OSHA's "Guidance on Preparing Workplaces for COVID-19" and the CDC's "Guidance for Businesses and Employers to Plan and Respond to COVID-19" provide important safety guidance information to identify risk levels and reduce the risk of exposure. The following recommended best practices are based on what is currently known about the COVID-19 virus. We strongly recommend that you stay current, and immediately implement the evolving best practices to protect the safety and health of your employees, clients, and the general public.
For all Essential Businesses, the Los Angeles County Health Officer orders businesses to take the following precautions:
- Practice social distancing by requiring patrons, visitors, and employees to be separated by six (6) feet, to the extent feasible.
- Provide access to hand washing facilities with soap and water or hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
- Provide personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, face shields and face masks as appropriate for the activity being performed.
- Post a sign in a conspicuous place at the public entry to the venue instructing members of the public not to enter if they are experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness, including fever or cough.
- Adhere to communicable disease control recommendations provided by the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health.
Examples of risk mitigation strategies include:
- Educate workers to effectively maintain social distancing while working
- Identify and monitor high risk closed-in areas to ensure social distancing is maintained.
- Stagger workers to reduce density.
- Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
- Clean and disinfect equipment before and after use.
- Post in visible areas, required hygienic practices.
- Require anyone on the project to stay home if they are ill.
- Have employees inform Supervisor if they live with anyone having COVID-19.
- Maintain a log of workers and visitors.
Construction sites that create unsafe conditions may be denied inspections and asked to shut down until compliance is achieved.
