Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and Stalls

Electric cars are becoming increasingly common in our communities. If you wish to install an electric vehicle charging station, here is what you need to know.

Contact the City Before Installing Charging Stations or Stalls

Prior to any installation or construction, the Community Development Department Development Services division should be consulted to determine specific requirements. If a contractor is hired to perform the work, it is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure that the appropriate electrical permits have been obtained.

Electrical work requires an Electrical Contractor with a C-10 License

Verify a contractor license with the California Contractor State License Board.

Requirements for New Buildings

All new residential and commercial buildings must be ready to accommodate electric vehicle charging by providing one of two options:

  • Option 1: Provide one 120V AC 20 amp and one 208/240V 40 amp, grounded AC outlet for each required parking space.
  • Option 2: Provide electrical panel capacity for one 120V AC 20 amp and one 208/240V 40 amp, grounded AC outlet and install conduit for a future outlet for each required parking space.

Number of Required Parking Spaces

All installations must comply with the current California Electrical Code requirements.

Electric Vehicle Permit and Inspection is required for all electric vehicle supply equipment installations. Please visit our Permit page for more details.

A Plan Check is also required for all properties.

Additional requirements may apply. Contact (310) 285-1141 with questions.

The following city building inspections must be completed prior to activation of the new charging circuit for the plug-in vehicle.

  • Final Electrical Inspection - Once the electrical devices are installed and system is in final operating mode. All panels, junction boxes, and wired connections must be opened at the time of inspections.

It is the homeowner’s responsibility to verify that all required inspections are completed satisfactorily.
