Tree Removal Permits
A Tree Removal Permit is required to remove a protected tree that is located between the house and any adjacent street. In addition, an Urban Grove located anywhere on a property may be subject to protection. The following types of trees are protected within the City of Beverly Hills.
- Native Tree
Any native tree that has a trunk circumference of 24” or greater, measured at a height of four feet and six (4’-6”) inches from the ground. The list of protected native tree species can be found at the link below.
- Heritage Tree
Any tree that has a trunk circumference of 48” or greater, measured at a height of four feet and six (4’-6”) inches from the ground.
- Urban Groves
Any tree located within an Urban Grove. An Urban Grove is any grouping of 50 or more trees where the branches are within six feet (6’) of other trees. Individual trees in an Urban Grove may be of any size and are not subject to any circumference limitations.
Prior to the issuance of a tree removal permit, the Community Development Department may request that a report, concerning the subject tree, be submitted by a licensed arborist.
No permit is required to remove an individual tree that is located outside the area between the house and any adjacent street, with the exception of trees located within an Urban Grove, which do require a tree removal permit.
If you have questions about whether a tree on your property may be protected, contact the Community Development Department at (310) 285-1141.
