Alternatives to Single-Use Plastics and Styrofoams

Plastic pollution, including single-use plastics and polystyrene, has raised environmental and health concerns related to water pollution, the welfare of marine life, and human health. In fact, every year, more than 8 million tons of plastic go into the oceans, wreaking havoc on marine wildlife and ecosystems. Plastic bags and disposable single use plastic items are a large part of that pollution.

Furthermore, the production and disposal of single-use plastics emit greenhouse gasses, a major contributor to climate change.

Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives to single-use plastic and Styrofoam items. Alternative items are made of compostable materials, such as wood, cardboard, paper, corn-based, and resin, and will biodegrade when composted. Reusable items are another great option.

Suppliers and distributers for items of alternative materials include: World Centric, Jaya, EcoChoice, Webstaurant, Tellus, Bare by Solo, Fineline, EcoProducts, Stalkmarket, Planet+, and Fabri-kal.

The City of Beverly Hills is currently considering an ordinance that would prohibit single-use plastic and styrofoam items. For more information about the proposed ordinance, visit the website here: beverlyhills.org/plasticandfoam
