New York artist Roxy Paine addresses the disconnect between natural process and human order - in this case, by fabricating a boulder using man-made technology, and material. In geology, the term "erratic" refers to a rock that has been carried by a glacier hundreds of miles away from its source. A real "erratic" would give evidence of its origin, but Erratic's slick steel exterior leaves its origin unexplained. Its journey is notable, however: before being purchased by Beverly Hills it was situated at two sites in New York City, Madison Square Park and Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
