Philadelphia-born Erwin Binder learned to cast metal and carve stone while working for his family's jewelry business. He subsequently came to California through the Air Force, which stationed him near the Mexican border. Such proximity allowed him exposure to contemporary Mexican painters and sculptors who were working with stylized human forms in the expression of a broad humanistic outlook. Corazon cleverly abstracts the human figure into the shape of a human heart.
